Believe it or not, Fantasy Football is not a game of chance. The people that consistently win in fantasy leagues are the people that are prepared going into the fantasy draft. Being prepared doesn’t necessarily have to mean that an owner must spend hours and hours looking over stats and numbers, but it does mean that the owner should have a good general understanding of who the best available players are. The second, and possibly more important step is for the owner to familiarize themselves with their league’s scoring system. There are many different scoring formats for fantasy leagues. Some leagues will asses more points for yards from scrimmage, some for touchdowns, and some for sacks. Once an owner knows which category is most valuable, they can then decide which players would best provide their team with that particular stat.

Say you are in a fantasy league where touchdowns are valued more than yardage. Now, when you are looking at player’s stats, focus on the players who consistently score the most touchdowns, even if their other stats are below par.

The last step before an owner goes into their fantasy draft should be to identify potential late round “sleeper” picks. These could be players who were injured the previous season, or players who the owner believes are primed for a breakout season. It is often these picks that define the draft and make the difference between a strong and weak fantasy team.
